Affordable Home Repairs in Alameda County: Spotlight on Renew AC & Minor Repair Grants

If you're a homeowner in Alameda County and your home needs repairs—but the cost feels out of reach—there’s good news. The Renew AC program, operated by Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley, offers low-interest loans and grants to help make essential home improvements affordable.

What is Renew AC?

Renew AC (Renew Alameda County) is a home improvement loan program funded by the Measure A1 Housing Bond, approved by voters in November 2016. It’s designed to help low-income homeowners make critical renovations that improve health, safety, and comfort—without the financial strain.

Here’s what makes it special:

• 1% simple interest loans ranging from $15,000 to $200,000
• No monthly payments—repayment is deferred until the home is sold
• Loans can be used for repairs like roofing, plumbing, electrical upgrades, and accessibility improvements
• Available to homeowners who live in Alameda County and meet income and asset requirements

Minor Home Repair Grants

In addition to loans, Habitat for Humanity and the Alameda County Healthy Homes Department offer grants for smaller repairs. These grants are ideal for fixes like:

• Plumbing and electrical repairs
• Installing grab bars, railings, or water heaters
• Replacing doors, locks, or toilets

Eligibility varies by city, but generally includes:

• Income at or below HUD limits
• Ownership of a home or mobile home in participating areas
• In Oakland, homeowners must be 62+ or have a disability 
   

These grants are free and do not require repayment. However, they’re limited to once every 2–3 years depending on your location, and some cities have waitlists due to high demand.
